What "no-fault" means

In Ontario, people injured in an auto accident usually apply for accident benefits through their own insurance company, regardless of who caused the collision. "No-fault" refers to how benefits are accessed โ€” it doesn't mean nobody was at fault.

Types of benefits people commonly ask about

  • Medical and rehabilitation support not covered by OHIP or other plans
  • Income-related benefits for people unable to work
  • Attendant care for people who need help with daily activities
  • Certain other expenses connected to the accident

Eligibility, amounts and limits depend on your policy, any optional coverage you purchased and your specific injuries.

If you don't have auto insurance

Passengers, pedestrians and cyclists may be able to apply through another policy โ€” such as a family member's or the insurer of a vehicle involved. Which insurer applies is decided by provincial rules.

Owner review needed: benefit categories, coverage amounts and application timelines change from time to time. Have this page reviewed by a licensed professional before publishing and link to official Ontario government or FSRA sources.
